My Favorite Cover

Irvine, Calif., (April 24, 2012) — Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto will not defend his AMA Motocross title in 2012 after injuring his knee at the Seattle supercross on Saturday night. The two-time AMA Supercross and defending AMA Motocross champion will undergo surgery on his knee this week.

“I’m pretty disappointed right now,” said Villopoto. “I have trained hard for this season and even though I won the supercross title, I really wanted to defend my outdoor championship. I’ve been through injury before and I know how hard I have to work to get back.”

Villopoto is coming off of a dominant 16 months where the Poulsbo, Wash. native earned two AMA Supercross titles on the strength of 15 wins, the AMA Motocross Championship with three wins and also the richest payday in supercross with a million dollar win at the Monster Energy Cup.

In this cover photo, Ryan Villopoto is being marked as the rider of the year in 2012. He had accomplished a lot this year and had been riding well which put him at the top of the game. He won every championship he competed for and even won all 3 races in the Monster Cup which helped him win a million dollar pay day. Villopoto is a legend on a dirt bike and has done very well with his career. This cover photo is of him gliding through the air on his Kawasaki KX450f, it is hard to follow most rules of composition when taking motocross photography but it is framed well and gets the point across with his red #1 number plate

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer:
Zero blemishes or acne, widened eyes, widened lips, curled hair
2. List the changes that were made to the model's body in the computer:
zero blemishes, skinnier stomach and legs, lengthened legs, widened neck, smaller feet, changed entire skin tone
3. List the changes that were made to the model in the computer:
made entire body skinny
4. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like these in a photo? Why or why not?
These changed are very unethical changed and unrealistic. They can effect anybody's perception of beauty making someone out to have an unachievable beauty. 
5. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
I believe all changes like in these videos are unethical and any sort of body manipulation to help someone achieve this type of beauty is immoral. 
6. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
I don't think changing someones body in anyway is ethical.
7. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
Fashion photography are people attempting to sell a product by putting it on a beautiful person whereas in photojournalism they attempt to shoot the realism of situations and not sugar coat anything, in most cases.
8. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each? 
Photojournalists are shooting for news purposes which causes one to shoot ethical pictures and not sugar coat the reality of the situation whereas fashion is just a trend and must be sugar coated to make money and sell products more efficiently. 
9. Why do you think I am showing you these three videos?
You're showing us these videos to make us realize how wrong, unethical and immoral manipulation can be.
10. Why are none of these videos about guys???
Guys don't need to achieve to perfect beauty like girls feel as if they need too.

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshow? Why?

This image shows Ian arriving homes and his loved ones there for him after a tough few years in the service.

B. Through the photos, Ian is in different locations, each set of photos from the same location comprise a short series or set. Can you tell where the sets are located? C. Which set of images was the most powerful? Why?
The images in Iraq were the most powerful due to the scenarios he was facing and time away from home serving for your country isn't documented through photography very often. 
D. How do the images work together to tell a story?
These images follow Ian, his life and choices. Some choices were for the better and some side tracked him from his main goal. In the end, he successfully achieved his time in service and was able to return home. 
E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written? The verbs are usually written in the present tense.

It made me sad.

The girl's grave said I loved it all, cancer is bad and does not define her.

i would prefer not to shoot pictures like this because of the reminder of pain.

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? Raising your ISO will give you the ability to capture a higher quality photograph because it gives you the ability to use a faster shutter speed and smaller aperture to get a sharper scene.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO? Low ISO means it'll take a longer time to capture the picture. Still pictures are best for low ISO. 

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO? Used when trying to capture moment clear while somethings in motion, shorter time to capture picture.

Academic Post Shoot Reflection & Critique

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?  The challenges I met while taking these pictures were finding students working on their assignments. 

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I always look for rule of thirds because it balances a picture visually. Along with rule of thirds, the framing is very important. 

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? If I redid this assignment, I would've gone in classrooms and attempted to shoot more teachers educating their students, working on projects or 

4. What things would you do the same? I still would've gone in the library to attempt to get some pictures worthwhile.5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve? Rule of thirds

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture? Lines is the hardest for me to capture because I really have to look for it and position myself to shoot lines properly.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is? I'm pretty clear on all the rules.

His framing was very well done and he followed rule of thirds well.Step 4: Write about one thing that could be improved in the photos.
In his first picture, the bushes cup partially visible could have been moved.

Africa & Abandoned Theme Parks

Africa

In this photographers experience, Africa's wildlife is an amazing & fascinating thing to study. Africa is so full of unique wildlife, vast plains & desserts. This Continent is facing a drought and poaching, though. Donating to specific charities such as, Tusk & The Nature Conservancy are ways to help Africa & preserve their wildlife. 

1.  I chose this picture as my favorite because it is so unique and captures the elephant tribe perfectly.
2.  Rule of Thirds: very front elephant placement, Framing: fit all elephants, Balance: elephants in a line traveling through grass beginning in the right to the left side of frame. Simplicity: all subjects fit and there's nothing in the picture besides elephants and plains.
3. Brandt does not use telephoto lenses because he believes that being close to the animals make a huge difference in his ability to reveal their personality.
4. Brandt takes these photos to support Africa's wildlife and create a urgency to help them. Poaching and droughts have been devastating Africa's wildlife population.
5. Help others notice the animals beauty and personality. Prove to others telephoto lenses are not needed for amazing photographs. 
6. My images are unashamedly idyllic and romantic, a kind of enchanted Africa. They're my elegy to a world that is steadily, tragically vanishing.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph

Takakanonuma Greenland, Hobara, Japan

 This park has a super cool location, that is a lot different than what i am used to seeing. The park also has super cool fog which adds to the whole abandoned theme. The park is very overgrown and rusty just like you would expect it to be. I also really like how large the rides are, its just like out modern day theme parks.

         

2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.


3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.


5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
      I would love to go to that location because it has a lot of color. I also like it because  it has the setting of some of the tv shows i watch. It would be very fun to travel to a different country to take pictures.


6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.

I would need a camera some batteries and some extra sd cards. Also need some lighting for some shot, tripods. I would need about 5000 for the plane tickets and food and a place to sleep.

Great Black & White Photographers Pt 3

Ansel Adams

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? I really enjoy nature photography. Especially in Colorado where it's mountainous. The mountains, trees, terrain and skyline is what caught my eye in this photo.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. 

I see vast nature with tall trees expanding out into the wilderness. I see rain off in the distance above that wilderness 
I smell pine trees everywhere. The fresh smell of a waterfall pouring off in the distance is present as well.
I hear the waterfall crashing down the mountain and the weather blowing the huge trees in the canyon. 
I taste pine trees. I taste the crunch of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
I feel relaxed. I also feel very free.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school.

You can do this in 2 ways. You can either put yourself in the photo and pretend your standing next to the subjects in the photo. I know smell and taste are hard but you can do it.

Or, you can pretend you were the photographer and use those same senses.

On the one titled - I feel - you may either touch things in your photo (imagination please!!) or you can tell me what you (yes, you in the real world) feel or felt the first time you saw the photo, or how it makes you feel when you look at it now.

BE REFLECTIVE HERE - try to be descriptive, try to write more than you think you can. One sentence per prompt is NOT ENOUGH, write at LEAST 3 sentences per!!! Write more, if you think its enough, its NOT.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school.

1. What theme, that we could take here at school, could we do a series of these panels to place around the school? We could use Bowie logos or Bulldogs.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones? I think the project should be open to phone cameras and regular cameras. Both are capable of capturing photographs used in the project.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus? These murals could be put in the athletic wing or around the Kennel.
